Delhi creates police force to protect tourists

Jyoti Koul - New Delhi

If the ministry of tourism has initiated steps to make India a safer haven for tourists, Delhi does not wish to lag behind. Realising that the safety of tourists is of paramount importance especially in a place like Delhi, which is a bustling hub and the index of the nation, the Delhi government has taken steps to ensure safety, especially of women travellers.

This step is also being taken in view of the upcoming CommonWealth Games to be held in the capital in 2010 when the state would expect a huge influx of tourists. In an exclusive with Express TravelWorld, Shiela Dikshit, Delhi chief minister said that the government is inducting additional police force to be deployed at all the tourist sites, especially at the historical monuments.

"I am aware of the fact that Delhi has an image that portrays it as a little unsafe but in reality it is as safe as any other destination in the world. I want to ensure that each and every tourist; be it international or domestic feels as safe and comfortable as they would feel in their native place. Therefore, we are inducting a huge number of additional police force to protect the tourists. Also, we are training girls to take on the job. Besides we are also deploying lady constables so that women tourists can easily share their apprehension, if any, or seek assistance," she said. The Delhi government is also launching new tourist help-lines soon.

According to Dikshit, it is very important to create a sense of security among visitors that come from across the globe. Delhi is a hot seat of power and it is one of the oldest cities in the world. It is a perfect blend of traditions and modern urban culture. It has good infrastructure and a vibrant culture. "Delhi is like a mini-India where you can see reflections of each and every part of our country. These features attract tourists from far off places and it is the responsibility of each one of us to create a safe haven for them," she concluded.
