The next big wave
The
boom that we hear in Indias aviation industry these days is just a prelude
of things to come. It is pitched as one of the fastest growing aviation markets
in the world today with a promise of further development. Experts even estimate
an average growth rate of 12 per cent as against the global average of just
five per cent.
Evidently, both Boeing and Airbus are completely thrilled with this. Boeing
has declared that it has already confirmed orders from a host of Indian carriers
and expects more business in future. But it is not only the `big boys' but even
regional jet aircraft companies like Bombardier and Embraer that are celebrating
the good times. Their potential clients - new airline companies that focus on
the regional markets within the Indian domestic space. It is not only the aircraft
manufacturers but also those involved in the leasing of aircraft who are interested
to know how the Indian market will evolve.
All these developments definitely uplift the spirit. But there are pressing
matters that require urgent attention - for instance, the congested airports,
especially the ones in Mumbai and New Delhi, as well as the lack of improved
and upgraded technology at the air traffic control towers along with an urgent
need for more quality manpower.
The air traffic control towers act as the main nerve centre for aviation traffic;
it ensures safety, fuel efficiency and quick turnaorunds. The country's aviation
industry has the strength to stay aloft for a long period. But in its self-congratulatory
mode, the industry must not waste the golden opportunity for success.
