carrier merged entity to consider regional jets
The Air India-Indian merger is likely to open up a new dimension
in buying and leasing of aircraft, amongst other developments,
and is considering investing in regional jet aircraft.
MDLR
spreads wings to Kulu with jet engine aircraft, Port Blair
to follow
The recently launched MDLR Airlines, which has in its fleet
only jet engine aircraft - the Avro RJ 70 - is soon to commence
operations to Kulu on July 16, 2007. It has also announced
plans to commence operations to Port Blair, that is New Delhi-Port
Blair via Kolkata by October 2007.
Garuda
Indonesia to fly into India by year end
After a long delay, national airline of Indonesia, Garuda
Airline, will fly into India by year end. The plan is to start
operations from Chennai to Medan and on to Singapore.
Silver
Software receives AS 9100B certification
Bangalore-based Silver Software which designed, developed
and verified the Landing Gear Extraction Retraction Systems
(LGERS) for the A380, has been given the AS 9100B certification,
which is an extension of ISO standards focusing on aerospace
safety.

India launches its cargo operations
Air India launched its cargo operations in end-June by deploying
the VT-EQT A310 freighter aircraft from Mumbai. The carrier,
one of the two converted passenger A310s, was flagged off
by Praful Patel, the Union minister of state for civil aviation.

Flightraja, a travel services portal, has announced that it
has raised US$ 5 million investment from NEA Indo US ventures,
a venture capitalistic firm. Vinay Gupta, chief executive

Pacific Asia's Travel Association (PATA) has taken a major
step forward as the chiefs of Burba Hotel Network (BHN), Centre

Stansted Airport looks at Indian carriers
BAA has initiated talks with Indian carriers including Jet
Airways and Kingfisher Airlines, positioning London Stansted
Airport as a viable alternative to London Heathrow Airport
for direct flights to the UK. Revealing this to Express Aviation
was Justin Baines, marketing director, BAA, who said that
the airport has been identified among BAA's airports for capacity
expansion.
Finnair
now connects Helsinki to Mumbai
After launching the first Delhi-Helsinki flight in October
2006, the national carrier of Finland has introduced a Helsinki-Mumbai
flight from June 27 that will carry passengers between the
two cities five times a week.
FDI
in domestic carriers unlikely to be increased beyond 74%
The government is considering two options to raise the cap
on foreign direct investment (FDI) in domestic airlines. The
first option is to raise the cap to 74 per cent from the existing
49 per cent and the second is to cap it at a level below 74
per cent.
Domestic
air travel rises 25% in June
Airline companies in India will fly more than 42,200 domestic
flights within India in June. This is an increase of 25 per
cent in the number of flights and 5.7 million seats, a 43
per cent rise in the number of seats in comparison to June
2006.
AAI
to modernise Chennai airport
Clearing the proposal to let Airports Authority of India (AAI)
modernise and upgrade the existing Chennai airport, the Prime
Minister's Committee on Infrastructure (CoI) also accorded
an "in principle" approval to the setting up of
a greenfield airport at Sriperumbudur.
Malaysia's
Air Asia planning to fly in India by end 2008
Air-India Express, a low cost subsidiary of Air India, will
soon have a competitor on the southeast Asian routes. According
to Tony Fernandes, CEO of Air Asia, the designated low cost
carrier of Malaysia, the airline is planning to fly to Indian
destinations like Kolkata, Cochin, Amritsar by end of 2008.

aviation ministry likely to probe ATF increase
Shaken by the massive increase in charges levied by airport
operators on the supply of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) by
oil companies, domestic carriers and the Federation of Indian
Airlines (FIA) have requested the civil aviation ministry
to look into the matter.

Following its merger with Indian Airlines, national carrier
Air-India (AI) will throw open its engineering services to

Gulf Air is all set to introduce a totally revamped flight
schedule beginning July 1, 2007. The new network, based on
a wave model, offers as many as 588 flights every
week in the Middle East with more non-stop flights than any
other airline. "

Airlines announces its 50th flight to India
Singapore Airlines announced its 50th flight service to India,
with the launch of its eighth weekly flight to Chennai.
IndiGo
launches flight to Agartala
Low-fare domestic airline Indigo, has started a service to
its fourteenth destination, Agartala. IndiGo will connect
Agartala to Kolkata and onward to Hyderabad and Bangalore
on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, with its
ninth brand-new Airbus A320.

Airlines re-announces date for Mumbai-New York service
Continental Airlines, the world's fifth largest airline, announced
it will launch a non-stop service between Mumbai and New York/Newark
earlier than originally planned, following a positive market
response to the proposed flights.

Air Deccan, India's largest low cost airline added its 20th

Airservices Australia today announced that it had signed an
agreement with Mumbai International Airport (MIAL) to provide

ministry seeks merchant airport policy overview
The finance ministry has called for a complete examination
of issues relating to the upcoming policy on merchant airports
and has asked the civil aviation ministry to look into issues
like - selection criteria for private players willing to build
merchant airports, possession of minimum land holding, whether
licences for such airports should be given on the basis of
bidding or if some other criteria could be adopted, and what
could be the financial requirements for companies applying
for such projects.

Aviation sector analysts expect India's largest private sector
airline Jet Airways Ltd to post significantly lower profits
for the January-March 2007 quarter, compared to the corresponding
period in fiscal 2006.
Vision-2020
eyes capital market funds
The proposed aviation policy is in favour of private and foreign
participation in the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The
policy 'Vision-2020,' which has been referred to a group of
ministers recently for wider consultations, suggests that
efforts would be made to raise funds from the capital market
and various modes of public-private partnership (PPP) "on
a fast-track mode" as part of restructuring the profit-making
public sector unit, sources said.
