TGFI, IATO Revise Fee Structure For Guides

To Be Implemented From October

Jyoti Koul - New Delhi

Subhash Goyal

Come October and guides will be a happy lot. The industry has revised the fee structure for the approved guides of India. It was during a meeting between the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) and the Tourist Guides Federation of India (TGFI) that this decision was taken in favour of state - and centre-approved guides.

Generally, as per the agreement between IATO and TGFI, the fee structure has to be revised every two years. But in 2004 realising the fact that the previous two years were not too bright for the industry, the TGFI volunteered for an extension of one more year. Therefore, this time around the fee structure on different allowances was revised after three years. The fee has been hiked by 20 to 25 per cent on account of various allowances like language, out-station excursions and conveyance etc.

IATO has also made it clear to the tour operators that a suitable amount may be given to the guides before the commencement of their assignment with a mutual understanding. Besides, the guides who request to work as ’an escort cum guide’ could negotiate the fees with the respective agents for the additional job of escorting. In an exclusive with Express Travel and Tourism, Avadesh N Mishra, general secretary, TGFI, said “We are very happy about the development. We believe that we have as important a role to play as any other service provider to boost the country’s tourism. The revised fee structure will encourage us to perform and thus contribute to the cause of the industry.” Guides are the unofficial ambassadors of a country, but it is sad to note that their role in tourism promotion is hardly being taken into account. We are never on the forefront of the affairs.”

“Steps like this hike will help repose faith in their profession and IATO supports them wholeheartedly and recognises their contribution for the development of tourism. Guides are an integral part of the tourism industry,” said Subhash Goyal, president, IATO. The revised fee structure will come into effect from October first 2004 and would be valid up to September 30, 2006.
