The
world with its diversity of races, ethnic types, religions,
linguistic groups and varied social structures, is the repository
of an amazing wealth of traditions. Art forms that date from
pre-historic time still survive while newer forms have evolved
assimilating later influences to provide a range and richness
that has few parallels. The Paaramparya Society of Kollam,
in association with department of culture, government of India
department of handlooms and handicrafts, government of India;
department of tourism, government of Kerala, and IGRMS Bhopal,
is organising Paaramparya, the craft and art festival of India
from February 15-22, 2003 at Asramom, Kollam.
Paaramparya
is a major event in this part of the world, that draws artists
from across the nation. This year, nearly 1,000 folk and tribal
artists are expected for the festival. This crowd will include
several traditional painters, artisans, craftsmen, cultural
performers and the like. They will demonstrate their indigenous
art and craft performance, hold thematic exhibitions and a
lot more. The event will have workshops and live demonstrations
of traditional arts and crafts by artists representing different
geographical zones, thematic exhibitions on traditional art,
architecture and culture of various tribes, visual and performing
arts by tribal and folk performers, seminars and talks on
culture and heritage, entertainment programmes, and interactive
sessions with artists.
Paaramparya is a movement started in Kollam, to provide an
arena to traditional tribal/village/folk artists and practitioners
to join together and express their creative abilities and
share their traditional knowledge. The general public is benefited
by this opportunity to contact, communicate and learn the
rich art and cultural traditional practices in different geographical
zones.
