ASSOCHAM Summit Focuses On An Integrated Approach For Tourism

L K Advani Subhash Goyal Shahnawaz Hussain

The recently concluded two-day international conference and tourism summit opened with the Deputy Prime Minister, L K Advani’s call for synergying of tourism and aviation and adopting an integrated policy for the two sectors. Advani who inaugurated the Summit organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry (ASSOCHAM) had a dig at the ‘advisories’ by some countries, which he said, only helped terrorists.

Subhash Goyal, chairman of the ASSOCHAM’s Expert Committee on aviation and tourism, stressed the need for an integrated approach and urged the government to set up at least one international airport in each of the union territories which in his opinion could provide 50-100 million jobs in a period of 20-25 years. The government’s commitment to the promotion of the tourism was appreciated but deplored that it had not been given the same priority as IT & Telecommunications. He stressed that though China had reached the figure of 50 million foreign arrivals India’s comparative figures remained confined to 2.4 million only.

Subsequently, civil aviation minister Syed Shahnawaz Hussain assured that his government would ensure that the airlines bringing passengers from Europe or Gulf would face no difficulty in flying into India. Besides bilaterals, he said another priority area of his ministry comprised safety and security particularly in the light of 9/11.

Concluding, president ASSOCHAM R K Somany, mentioned that his association was trying to put tourism and aviation on the forefront of the national agenda.
