Wahi Re-Elected As IATO President
IATO Aims To Create A Confederation Of Tourism Bodies And Associations

Jyoti Koul - New Delhi

Maharaj I S Wahi

At the recently concluded Annual General Meeting (AGM), Maharaj I S Wahi was re-elected as president of Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) for a term of two years. Wahi has been elected unopposed as members were happy with his achievement as far his agenda and tourism interests were concerned.

Besides, the president, other elected office bearers include:

  • Zuleikha Karnik - senior vice-president
  • Deepak Sengupta - vice-president
  • Vijay Thakur- honourary secretary and
  • Lally Mathews - honourary joint secretary

The newly elected office bearers have already charted out an agenda for the term under both long-term and short-term categories. In its long-term agenda, the focus will be laid on the development of the IATO International Centre.

“We have set our goals for the next two years and priority will be to get the project (IATO International Centre) kicked off. We are already in the process of acquiring land and are also planning to have an institution for tourism learning, a club, recreational facilities and accommodation facilities at the Centre. However, our short-term goals include uniting all tourism bodies and associations to develop and promote tourism. We are looking at uniting like-minded associations like TAAI, TAFI etc. The idea is to prepare a common platform on a common minimum programme for development of tourism, whereby, we will be directing and advising the government on issues and concerns of the industry. The association is also aiming to form a confederation of all tourism bodies and trade associations. However; the identity of these associations will not be diluted. We are working out some patterns for the same and are hopeful to get a positive response from these associations,” says Wahi.
