Tarkarli Beach Haven

Achal Dhruva - Mumbai

A place for no news and no shoes, a place to grip hold the sand with bare-feet and throw ones body in to the sea and to fill the head with vast seascapes and red orbs of sun falling into the sea. The surf, sand, sun and the art of doing nothing, coupled with best mangoes and Malvani cuisine has been the magic mantra of this small laid back, out of the way coastal village.

Tarkarli, situated on the confluence of river Karli and Arabian sea, six kilometres from Malvan in Sindhudurg district is a perfect hideaway for a ‘I, me and myself’ kind of holiday. Virtually, a virgin beach with silver soft sands and pristine clear waters, Tarkarli is a haven for sun worshippers and has acquired international fame. Besides domestic tourists, international curiseliners like Hebridean Spirit has made this stunning beach a regular port of call.

Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) beach resort with ten Konkani style cottages is the perfect place to unwind.

Sea-food lover’s paradise, Malvani cuisine is typical and spicy just like the Malvani language. Bhangda, Surmai, Prawns, crabs or any other fish depending on the season, its always the fresh catch of the day. Chaitanya, a ‘hole in the wall’ eatery in Malvan market serves excellent seafood, generous helpings at reasonable prices.

The unconquered Sindhudurg Fort, located one and half kilometres in the sea from Malvan jetty is one of the major attractions.

Built by Shivaji in 1664, the sprawling fortress housing the only temple dedicated to Shivaji Maharaj is an architectural wonder.

Watching the vast open sea from the ramparts lashed by the pounding waves, the spray rising nearly 20 feet is an amazing experience. Equally mesmerising is watching hundreds of seagulls at Deobagh beach take flight simultaneously from the breaking waves. A tiny strip of sand jutting out at the confluence of the creek (with a back drop of a hillock) and the sea, Deobagh Beach, located six kilometres south of Tarkarli is a picture perfect idyllic picnic spot.
