Gujarat - Poonam Dhillon

What is the essence of Gujarat? Well, as somebody who was born in Gujarat (not brought up though), I find it difficult to give a brief answer since the state is so vibrant in every aspect. It just takes you by surprise.

Gujarat is a very colourful state: be it the locals, fairs and festivals, artifacts and even the destinations. Even the Gujarati people are very practical, pragmatic and enterprising. Religion plays a very important role in regulating people’s lives there. It’s ironical that the two most commonly used words in Gujarati - Kem Cho? - has so much in meaning besides the ordinary - how are you? It is a sign of welcome; one can break the ice with these two words; kem cho is also a sign of help and friendship.

One of my most memorable experiences of the state was going on the Royal Orient train that departs from Delhi and provides a complete window to many colourful destinations. Commencing with Chittaurgarh, the ride includes exquisite island palaces, grand buildings, 18th century gardens with fountains. The train moves on to Udaipur and Mehsana and then to Ahmedabad, the commercial capital of Gujarat. Sasan Gir and the awesome Lion Safari in Gir Forest follows. We then move on to Delwada visiting Diu and then depart for Palitana, the temple town. The other destinations en route are Sarkhej, Rankapur, Jaipur and finally back to Delhi. This trip is worth a try, at least once in your lifetime. In conclusion, I will add that to briefly write about Gujarat would not be doing justice to it.There is a lot to the state. Besides, I forgot to add that Gujarat is also the land of Gandhi. It is from here that Gandhiji undertook the Salt March at Dandi. Gujarat is also the land of khadi. These are just some of the facets of the state. There’s much much more to it.
