Lakshman V /Bangalore

In an attempt to renew its commitment towards comprehensive development of tourism in the Union Territory, the Pondicherry government has enhanced its recent budgetary allocation for tourism to Rs 11.88 crore, an almost 100 per cent increase over last year’s outlay of Rs 6.18 crore.

Speaking to Express Travel & Tourism, G Malar Kannan, director, department of tourism, government of Pondicherry, revealed, “Recognising the immense potential that tourism holds both in terms of revenue generation and creating new employment opportunities, the government of Pondicherry has announced a two-fold increase in the budget outlay. The Budget has also spelled out concrete initiatives towards upgrading existing tourism infrastructure in the Union Territory.”

“The budget will certainly prove a shot in the arm and will go a long way in promoting and marketing Pondicherry as an heritage destination of sorts. This apart, it is also proposed to set up a land bank, where-in private entrepreneurs will be encouraged to set up hotels, resorts, theme parks etc with the government providing requisite land as an joint equity,” divulged Kannan.
