Woos Tourists Through ‘Moatsu Festival’

The state government has urged domestic and international hotel companies to set up their properties in the state, for which all the support and cooperation has been assured by the government

In an effort to enhance the tourism potential of Nagaland, a number of measures have been initiated by the state tourism department. Speaking to Express Travel & Tourism, I Imkong, state industries and commerce and tourism minister divulged the initiatives undertaken by the Nagaland government in the recent past.

“There are two prominent aspects to the state. Firstly, it considered to be as beautiful as Switzerland, with its richest asset - the kaleidoscopic ethnic culture of its tribes - Ao, Angami, Chakhesang, Chang, Kuki, Konyak, Zeliang and others. Secondly, almost everyone speaks English, which is an added advantage to the state,” revealed Imkong.

The minister further disclosed that, “There are very few government-run hotels and some small private hotels. This results in dearth of international hotel accommodation in the state. So, the state government has urged domestic and international hotel companies to set up their properties in the state. The state government has assured all kind of support and cooperation in setting up these properties; right from land acquisition, water and power connection to other legal formalities.”

He also added that, both domestic and foreign tourists have been urged to visit the state, since legal restrictions for the entry of foreign tourists in the state have been simplified and lifted, in some cases. The forthcoming highlight for tourists would be the Moatsu Festival, a three-day event commencing in the first week of May. The festival is basically the sowing festival of the Aos and the state government is extensively promoting it as a village-festival, urging tourists to come and experience it to the core.

Concluding Imkong mentioned that, its only after completion of all these manifold activities will the celebration of Moatsu Mong takes place. The Aos invite delegates from neighbouring villages and exchange gifts to renew traditional friendship, which helps strengthen traditional bonds and result in peace and harmony. This year, the state government has identified Chuchuyimlang village as the destination for the event; Chuchuyimlang is situated 40 km away from Mokokchung on the NH 61 towards Amguri in Assam.
